We set up the session today so that children would find the tasks pretty much impossible to do and that they would experience times of not succeeding or being successful, we then asked them to react in 3 different ways when they failed to do the task like either shouting and screaming 2) taking 10 seconds out to breathe and smile 3) asking them to give themselves some positive self talk like saying I can do this- I will do this! We related back to home and school life where we spoke about at home when we would do something hard first time like being able to tie our own shoe laces and learning from failing and understanding it is a skill that the more we practice the more we would learn /get better from our previous efforts till eventually we would achieve it! In school when we would have a test or exam we’d struggle and probably get some of the questions wrong but by practicing on the ones we got wrong we could learn and give ourselves a better chance of getting them right next time. We finished with how we should not fear failing but embrace it!
No human ever became interesting by not failing. The more you fail and recover and improve, the better you are as a person. Ever meet someone who’s always had everything work out for them with zero struggle? They usually have the depth of a puddle. Or they don’t exist.” – Chris Hardwick
I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
